EVERYTHING You Could Ever Want to Know About Article Spinning

Word spinning, how can you spin words to add a level of uniqueness to your articles?I think it is important that we go over what spinning is before we start with everything else.  Spinning in its most basic terms means to create alternate text for your article that software will swap in and out for you.  This is done to use pretty much the same article, however still make it unique enough so that Google does not think it is duplicate content.  I realize that this subject can be complicated, and it is rather dry, I hope it is as informative as I think it is.  I tried to simplify this as much as I could while still explaining things in detail.

Syntax.  The syntax of the spin is the key to everything.  There are really only 3 things you need to know.  { is the thing that starts the section you want spun.  } ends the section, and | is put between the words in the { } to tell the software the choices it has.  Here is a basic example:

The {cow|dog|horse} jumped high.

In the sentence you can see that there are sections outside of the { }, and this is OK.  Anything not in a { } will not be spun.  In the sentence the animals cow, dog and horse will be chosen randomly to finish the sentence.  The cow jumped high will be used 33% of the time, because there was only 3 variables.

It is important to know that the greater the number of variables used, the greater the uniqueness it can be.  Now simply changing it to {cow|cow|dog|horse} will change it so that cow is now used 50% of the time, and dog and horse only 25%, it will not help your uniqueness because cow was already used.  All you’ve done is made the chance that cow is picked go up from 33% to 50%.

Application.  To put spin to work you need to spin as much of the sentence as you can.  I’ll use the example sentence again.  We’ll go nuts and see how much of that short 4 word sentence we can spin.

{The|A} {cow|dog|horse|sheep|bull|duck} {fell down|ate food|took a nap|barked}.

One more quick thing.  The period always needs to go directly after the spin, you can do it inside the spin, but you could be putting in several periods, and there is really no reason to do all that extra stuff.  It is just easier to do it after.

OK, so in the example where we added a lot more spin, the first word has 2 variables, the 2nd I expanded to 6, and the last I combined into 1 (yes you can put several words in spin together and we’ll cover this later) for 4 variables.  So we have 2*6*4 different sentences we can come up with, or 48.  Now, the 48 sentences will be fairly similar to each other, and because the sentence is small, it will not be that different from each other.  Another thing you need to worry about that also needs to be addressed is that what you write has to make sense with what you wrote before, and what you will write in the later sentences.

In Sentence.  So, this is what is referred to as in sentence level spin.  It has its uses, and can really go a long ways towards adding uniqueness to your articles without spending a lot of time.  It is great if you can add a lot of variables, and not have it conflict with things you’ve written, or will write later.  Sadly because things are never easy, this cannot always be used, however it can be used within the next level of spin.

Sentence.  Sentence level spin is where you write several sentences together and use 1 of the 2-3 different sentences.  It still does not address the problem that was just brought up about keeping things consistent, but we’ll get to that in paragraph after we finish here.  In sentence you will write 2-3 versions of each sentence, and spin them.  Here is an example:

{I like to go for walks at night|I have a friend that enjoys video games|my neighbors dog barks a lot}.

OK, so we have 3 different sentences together in a spin.  I realize they’re unrelated, but if your only goal was to spin some random comments together for blog comment spam, this might work well.  Now in this sentence level spin, you can still go deeper to in sentence and spin each sentence further.  That way if you were doing some blog comment spam or whatever, it would add uniqueness to it.  In this example we’re also going to look at nested spin (spinning in a spin)

{I {really |}{enjoy|like to go for} {runs|walks|jogs} {at night|in the evening|after dark}|I have a {brother|friend|sister|co-worker} that {hates|despises|enjoys|loves} {video games|french fries|TV|ants}|my {friend’s|neighbor’s|brother’s} dog barks {a lot|all the time}}.

As you can see it can get incredibly complicated very quickly.  This is why most people will use some sort of spinning program that color codes things.  When you are doing nested (spin in a spin) spin, it can be very easy to forget to put a } in there, and throw the entire spin off.  Lets look at that same spin in color before we analyse it.

In the above example everything not spun is in black (only the period in this example is un-spun).  Everything inside of a spin bracket is green, and everything inside a nested spin (spin in a spin) is in purple.  This lets you see where things are, and what will be spun within each spin.  This way if you need to edit things, or fix a problem (such as forgetting a }) it should be easier to find.

Another new technique I used in the above sentence is {really |}.  What this does is 50% of the time it uses the word really, however it will put a space after it, so that it does not sit up against the next word.  That space after really is important.  The difference is …reallyenjoy.. vs …really enjoy…  The other 50% of the time it does not use really and is just blank.  Because there is no spacing in there, nothing is used if this is used for the spin.  This can add some extra uniqueness to your articles by sometimes using extra adverbs.

Paragraph.  I think you can guess where we’re going with this… yep its paragraph level spin.  Its what you can do if you really want to step up your spin to the next level, and make sure that spun sentences you wrote before will match up with what you write later in the paragraph.  You can still do sentence and in sentence level spin.

I’m not going to lie, writing 2-3 paragraphs for every paragraph you have is going to take a while.  I’m really not even sure it is going to be worth it unless you have a huge network of PBN’s that you need content for or a well paying client.  This level of spin should give you a few hundred semi unique articles if you have 3-4 paragraphs that are spun at the paragraph and in sentence levels.

OK, so you want uniqueness but you don’t want to spend all the time required to do paragraph level spin, what can you do?  How about image or video or even links spun into the article?  Yes, this is fairly easy to do.  You will need some sort of spreadsheet program to do this, so if you don’t have one use Google Docs or whatever.

Spinning Links.

spreadsheet showing how to create spun links

Now in the above image you can see on the top row the format.  Simply type this into a spreadsheet as it is.  Everything below it should be the url you want to link to, and the anchor text you want to use.  You can just cut and paste it all in.  Just drag the rows with <a href=” and the other rows down to the length of the url’s and the anchor text.  The only thing you need to watch for is the Brackets column.  The first one needs to be { so that your spinner will know that is the start of the spin.  Each other needs to be a | so that it knows where the new spin section is.  At the very bottom you need the } to tell the spinner that this is the end of what you want spun.

Once you are done you will have something that looks like my above example, but likely much longer.  You can use these anywhere in your article, but again you will want to make sure that whatever anchor text you are using matches up with where it is placed.  So now that you have something similar to what is here, copy it all and paste it into a text file.

You will end up with something that looks unusable because of all the white space.  Copy the white space between the text, under edit choose “Replace”.

how to fix the spin to remove the white space in the notepad file

You want to paste the white space into the top box, and leave the bottom one empty.  This will remove the blocks of empty space between what was the different columns when it was a spreadsheet.

this is what the notepad will look like without the white space

Now all that is left is to start at the last row you have a url on, go to the end of the row, right after the </a> and press the delete key (not backspace).  This will pull the } up behind the </a>.  Move to the next line up, and keep doing this until you are at the top.  What this does is it removes the space in between the | that can cause problems.  This can take a bit longer if you have a lot of url’s that you’ve spun.  Once you have removed all the spaces you should have something that looks like this:

the spin text fully finished and ready to be placed into an article

Now it is ready to be inserted into an article so that every time you spin it, it will spit out a different url to the site you want to link to.  You can do this same thing with YouTube videos or images.  The only thing you will need to do is put the YouTube url in the spreadsheet while leaving the video id blank so you can fill it in later.  With the image, I use Google images to find the url of images I like and use it that way.  So far I have not had any of the images get changed or deleted that I’m aware of so everything still looks cool on the articles I’ve done this to.

So this is all great, but how can you really speed things up even further?  If you are anything like me, this is what you’ve been asking yourself the entire time.  I’m sorry, but we had to go over the basics before we got to this, partly to teach people who didn’t know, and also to show people how much simpler this way is.

image of the spin rewriter software packageI use a service called Spin Rewriter.  What I do is simply load an article into the software.  It spits out a spun version using its algorithms to try to use the best English it can to spit out the most readable article it can that is also usable over and over across my network of PBN sites.  What you need to know is that this method is not as good as spinning it yourself, HOWEVER… it is going to save you a ton of time.  After I get the spun article out of it, I go over it myself.  I find that in 15-20 minutes I can fix the few minor problems (the spun part that does not work with my article) and add in more spin in different areas.  This creates fantastic articles for me in a very short time that are totally reusable, and in perfect English.

I can take articles I’ve written, or hired people to write, or even “borrow” articles I’ve found on the web.  The software is able to change it enough to where I don’t have any problems using it for my own site.  Again if this is tier 1 content you will want to invest the 15-20 minutes to make it tier 1 quality.  Tier 2 I don’t even bother to clean up, I just use it as it is.  This is an option for people who really don’t want to spend all day spinning articles.

I hope you found this helpful.  I put a lot of time into this and if you did find it helpful please share this with someone that can use it.  I would really appreciate it.  If you have questions about anything please leave me a comment and I’ll answer anything you don’t understand below, and may edit the article to include it so that it is more informative.

    Hey Bill,

    Another Great Article!

What are your thoughts on the different spinning services out there. I noticed that you yourself use SpinRewriter. How do they stack up against some of the other companies out there?

The only other spinner I have looked at is Wordai. I thought it did a little bit better of a job, but not enough to justify the price. What I really wanted it to do was be good for doing bulk spinning of articles in individual files. What I found out was that it assigns them a random file name when it spits them out. So it ended up taking nearly as long to figure out what was what sorting through each file than it took to write all the articles. It was a real pain in the ass.

Really great article. Thanks for sharing!

I use Spin Rewriter myself but I find it a little confusing. I can do the one click rewrite okay, and spend a while sorting out the text to make it readable, but it’s obviously a more sophisticated tool that that.

Although I’ve seen other tutorials on article spinning, yours is the first that explains the principles clearly rather than just demoing a tool, so thank you for that. Although it must be pretty obvious to some people what sentence and paragraph level spinning, is I feel very reassured having read your explanation.

I especially like the section you wrote on spinning links, and I’m going to have a go at that right away. I keep reading that link variety is important to avoid a penalty, and I was wondering how that could be avoided when producing a large number of versions of an article.

I had a look at WordAI that you mentioned, but it just seems to promise the same stuff as Spin Rewriter, while having a pretty hefty price tag!
